Lake Oloiden; The flamingos paradise, Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha may be a freshwater lake, but the alkaline waters of its near neighbor Lake Oloiden draw small but impressive flocks of flamingos. Boat safaris are available. Apart from anything else, the real appeal here is that it’s one of the few stretches of public land in the area where you can walk near to the lakeshore.

Lake Oloiden The flamingos paradise.

Lake Oloiden; the new found heaven for flamingos.

Are you in search of flamingos? Well, they have found a new heaven for themselves in Naivasha little known Lake Oloiden.

Flamingos in Lake Oloiden

Lake Oloiden was formerly part of Lake Naivasha but it is now separated from its south west shore by a stretch of an elevated land. The distance between Lake Naivasha and Lake Oloiden is about 200 meters. Lake Oloiden which means “Salty” in the Maa language is about 5 square kilometers and is a breeding ground for the common and white necked cormorants.

This Lake is a home to approximately 7 families of Hippos. Oloiden has an underground inlet which contains volcanic ashes thus making the Lake salty. Its P.H is 9.8 basic and is one of the reasons that the flamingos are here in their thousands squawking and splashing in great excitement as they savor the bountiful harvest of the blue green algae. Both the lesser and the greater flamingos are in plenty here after they left Lake Nakuru, their official home due to the prolonged rains. The levels of the water in Lake Nakuru National Park are so high thus the food for the flamingos cannot thrive well. The flocks of flamingos at Lake Oloiden are a spectacle to behold.

A boat trip in this lake offers a good opportunity to see some of the numerous water birds and other creatures that thrive in this salty water habitat. This lake is surrounded by the yellow green acacia trees which act as a home to the Giraffes, warthogs, Impalas, waterbuck, Elands, Zebras, Thompson gazelles just to name but a few. Take a visit to this less known lake for its wealth of flamingos and also for its considerable scenic beauty
